More than 20 years ago, Lifehouse pioneered the development of affordable
housing for developmentally disabled adults in Marin with a 12-unit
apartment complex. We remain committed to identifying new affordable
housing opportunities for the developmentally disabled in Marin and
Sonoma counties. We continue to look at opportunities for new housing
development and are currently in the process of applying to develop
a new HUD funded complex.
In 2001, we applied for and received a grant from the Department
of Developmental Services to work on housing issues. This effort
resulted in several workshops on affordable housing and the formation
of a committee of families that are interested in developing new
approaches to housing. It also resulted in the formation of a three-county
corporation, West Bay Housing, formed in August of 2004 to develop
a concerted broad-based effort to develop housing for the developmentally
disabled within Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo counties.
Lifehouse continues to advocate for more affordable housing, as
high costs are a key barrier to program expansion. Staff members
are active in local housing organizations that advocate for affordable
housing, including the Marin Housing Council, the San Rafael Chamber
of Commerce workforce housing consortium, the Ecumenical Association
for Housing, and the Marin Continuum of Services. |
